An orthocerous plate refers to a fossilized part of an ancient marine creature known as an orthoceras, which was a type of cephalopod that lived during the Paleozoic era, particularly in the Ordovician to Triassic periods.

Orthoceras were marine animals that resembled modern-day squid or octopuses, with long, straight shells. The "orthocerous plate" typically refers to a fossilized cross-section of their shells, which are often found in limestone or shale deposits. These shells are divided into chambers, and the animal would use the gas-filled chambers to regulate buoyancy as it moved through the water.

Orthocerous plates are highly prized by collectors and paleontologists due to their distinctive appearance and the insight they provide into the ancient marine ecosystems of their time.
